The British Institute of Funeral Directors

The British Institute of Funeral Directors is an organisation of highly experienced, qualified Funeral Directors who provide care for professionally qualified individuals working within the Funeral Industry. Its main aim being to promote education within the profession.

The Funeral Service Journal

First published in 1886, the FSJ has become the leading journal in British funeral directing. Independent funeral directors, Co-operative societies, Dignity branches and other group companies are all subscribers. The FSJ has a substantial readership in Ireland and can even be found in funeral directors’ offices around the world. It is a lively, colourful, monthly magazine featuring news items, mortality figures for the UK and Ireland, regular features, and the most comprehensive classified advertising section in British funeral directing. For advertisers, the magazine is the best way to reach funeral directors, and for funeral directors it is the best chance of keeping up to date with events in the industry.

No one ever wants to organise a funeral but when the inevitable happens it is reassuring to know that a National Association of Funeral Directors (NAFD) member firm will guide you through the process and help you make arrangements at what can be a very upsetting time.

The National Society of Allied & Independent Funeral Directors. This site has information of interest to members of the public, members of the funeral profession, and SAIF members.

The British Institute of Embalmers was founded in 1927 by a group of 15 Funeral Directors who recognised the need for a separate organisation for the professional embalmer. The ‘Memorandum of Association’ lists 19 Objectives for which the Institute was established. Many of these are legal statements concerning the activities in which the Institute may be concerned and, whilst vital for the correct functioning of the Institute, are not directly concerned with embalming itself.
